The Tourism Export Council of New Zealand has cancelled its 2020 annual conference, which was scheduled to be held over two days at New Plymouth in August.

However, the association has rebooked the same venue, The Devon Hotel, to hold the 2021 event late next year. The last time Taranaki hosted the conference was 1999.

“We are in an unfortunate position where we have to postpone the 2020 TECNZ conference,” said Lynda Keene, chief executive of TECNZ.

“It is disappointing to make this decision, but we look forward to showcasing the Taranaki region and reconnecting our members together to celebrate TECNZ’s 50^thconference anniversary in 2021.”

Between 220 to 320 travel trade personnel and key product suppliers attend the annual event, which was last held at Rydges Latimer Christchurch in August last year.

Venture Taranaki said it would team up with local accommodation providers and regional industry operators to develop a conference programme that showcased the region for next year’s event.

“Venture Taranaki is very pleased to be able to support the TECNZ 50^th anniversary conference in 2021,” said Venture Taranaki chief executive, Justine Gilliland.

“We look forward to the conference showcasing both the amazing destination Taranaki offers, and what ‘reimagined’, regenerative tourism looks like for New Zealand.”

Peter Tennent, managing director of The Devon Hotel, said tourism had taken a hit from the Covid-19 pandemic.

“What better time and place to get things back on track,” he said.

“We just need to focus on delivering the best and most productive conference TECNZ has ever had.”

The sold-out event was to take place on 30 March at Rydges Auckland with an audience of around 100 communications specialists from tourism organisations around the country.

It was an extension of TIA’s Discussing Tourism regional events and would have featured a media panel to discuss how industry specialists could tell better tourism stories.

“Given the uncertainties around what our world might look like by 30 March, as well as the unprecedented challenges facing our members, it didn’t seem feasible to continue at this time,” TIA said in a statement yesterday.

“We’re very sad about this, as it was looking to be a really good and interesting day. On the bright side, we have established there is a demand for an event of this type, so we can look at reviving the concept one day in the future.”

TIA said would look to provide some communications content in the form of a webinar or similar.

Auckland Airport has also announced the cancellation of its Tourism Forum 2020, which was as due to take place in Christchurch on 18 May.

The event coincided with the start of TRENZ, which has also been cancelled.

“During this unprecedented time, we are in dialogue with government and industry to provide information to ensure quality decisions are made,” said Scott Tasker, general manager of aeronautical and commercial at Auckland Airport.

“Auckland Airport is working closely with government, airlines, tourism industry and our business partners in managing through the initial stages of the pandemic, and thereafter we are advocating for joining together in seeking tourism and aviation industry recovery.”

Speakers at the event were set to discuss the challenges the industry faced, with a focus on recovering from crisis and rebooting small and medium tourism operators.

Across the ditch, Tourism Australia yesterday confirmed that it is cancelling its flagship trade event showcase, the Australian Tourism Exchange (ATE), due to take place in Melbourne in May.

The inaugural Tourism Tech Expo at Queenstown attracted around 100 delegates with seven start-ups pitching and presenting to investors and operators.

The event at the Queenstown Memorial Centre on Friday is hoping to expand into a three-day expo next year to be held from Thursday to Saturday, 5-7 November 2020.

James Burnes, chief executive of Startup Queenstown Lakes Trust, said he was pleased with how the event had enabled start-ups, investors and operators to connect

“The goal here is not just talking about what products or services you can buy but how do you build your business around leveraging these tools? I think longterm Tourism Tech Expo is about that message: how do you connect your business with the technology to make more money, to be more profitable, to build a better customer experience and to be more sustainable.”

Funding for next year’s event would again come from Startup Queenstown and, hopefully, strategic partners to help boost the number of delegates from 100 to 500 at the event, which would be held at the Queenstown Events Centre.

“We cannot, as an organisation, do this alone – we don’t have the funding resources or the staffing resources,” said Burnes.

“Several good people have raised their hands and said they want to see this get to the next level and hopefully we’ll be able to talk about that sooner rather than later.”

Charlie James, chair of Flying Kiwi Angels, is one of three investors on a panel scrutinising start-ups at today’s inaugural Tourism Tech Expo 2019 at Queenstown.

Seven New Zealand start-ups are pitching at the event, including AI-powered chatbot platform Yonder, last-minute deals provider Last Spot, and Dunedin-based homestay network Look After Me.

“Tourism is one of our biggest sectors so there’s a lot of demand for new stuff and bright ideas and there are a lot of operators who are looking for more tools,” said James.

“And there’s a global trend towards adventure tourism so our innovations in New Zealand in the tourism space – a lot of them have potential global markets.”

One quality James would be looking out for would be the standard and make-up of the teams involved.

“Often the team is more important than the idea. An ‘A’ team often does better with a ‘B’-class idea, than a ‘B’ team with an ‘A’-class idea.”

Good team passion and market understanding were also vital qualities being sought, said James.

He added that today’s first ever Tourism Tech Expo 2019 event could play an important role in connecting industry, investors, and opportunities.

“It’s important down here to help join dots because there are obviously smart people with ideas and there are obviously market opportunities for some of those ideas.

“The Tourism Tech Expo has the immediate effect of helping people join some dots and it’s part of raising the general awareness that there is this growing ecosystem and that there are theses opportunities.”
